Community News Business Spotlight:

Eco Quality Landscaping caters to clients perferences

Two young Clifton Park kids growing up as neighbors in Sherwood Forest have teamed up and formed Eco Quality Landscaping - a small company that is gaining some noticeable market share of our suburban turf.

President Andrew Hazlett admits that landscaping was a personal interest of his all throughout high school. While doing some coursework in environmental studies at Hudson Valley Community College, Hazlett flew solo as he continued to build the company.

"Landscaping always came naturally to me growing up. The year after I graduated from Shen I officially started up my business and worked for myself. My neighbor and friend, Philip Hyde, was also landscaping. We decided to combine efforts. He's good at designs, concepts and drawings. I focus on the whole operation, I'm the managing partner. I usually give the estimates and interact with our clients. We're both at every job site and we do the labor as well," Hazlett says.

Last year, just the two men, who met at Arongen Elementary School when they were mere kindergarteners, were on the payroll. In 2011, they added three more seasonal employees, a second truck and several trailers to accommodate the needs of any project.

Both Hazlett and Hyde know how important elbow grease (and a strong back) is in the world of landscaping and they welcome the challenge, both fiscal and physical.

Most of their clients are referrals from homeowners who hired them "back in the day" to mow a lawn or snow blow a driveway. Hazlett is proud to say that many of those who believed in them then continue to use their services today.

"I can't say this enough how we appreciate new clients brought on by our original customers - friends of friends," Hazlett adds. With a focus on residential needs, Eco Quality Landscaping offers just about everything the suburban home may need from basic maintenance of lawn mowing and spring and fall clean ups to more sophisticated work, such as the construction of retaining walls, patios and walkways.

The company also offers garden bed and tree and shrub installations. All issues involving drainage can be addressed, as well. The company is fully insured.

Eco Quality Landscaping received some nice kudos recently as they completed a small patio at the historic Grooms Tavern (see photos below); Hazlett and Hyde offered their services pro bono to the town of Clifton Park. Their portion is finished, but more is to come when benches are installed in the spring offering residents a quiet space to read or share some community conversation with this wonderful historic building as a backdrop.

Now gearing up for winter, there are two separate crews, one for snow plowing and one for snow blowing. They use only environmentally-friendly Magic Salt for driveways and walkways knowing it's non-toxic and less corrosive.

Customers mean the world to any business, but Eco Quality Landscaping takes it a step further knowing how many seniors enlist its services. They keep a special watch over them.

"We've recently been doing a lot of job for the elderly and handicapped. We've been hired for maintenance, patios and walkways to accommodate their needs. We feel a big responsibility to maintain their properties properly," he said.

Their website reiterates this point, noting, as a company, how devoted they are to creating not only landscapes they can be proud of, but more importantly, those that are specific to clients' preferences and tastes.
